Overview of Tawk.to
Tawk.to is a fully free live chat platform offering a chat widget, visitor monitoring, chat history, and a ticketing system. It is hosted entirely on tawk.to's cloud infrastructure and monetises through agent-hire and white-labelling services rather than subscription fees, making it one of the most widely used free chat options for WordPress.
How Super Speedy Chat differs from Tawk.to
All plugins from Super Speedy Plugins share a SQL-first architecture and an uncompromising focus on performance — and Super Speedy Chat is no different. Here is what sets it apart:
Self-hosted WordPress live chat with an inbox you can answer from wp-admin, Discord or WhatsApp through Meta Cloud API. Keep the core conversation history in WordPress, avoid per-agent SaaS fees and choose which external channels to connect.
Tawk.to is free but fully cloud-hosted — all conversations flow through their servers, and the chat widget is served from their CDN, adding an external JavaScript dependency to every page of your site. Super Speedy Chat is self-hosted and uses a mu-plugin architecture for ultra-fast AJAX delivery, keeping all conversation data on your own server and minimising third-party script load on your pages.
How to choose between Tawk.to and Super Speedy Chat?
Tawk.to's free price point is hard to argue with, but the external script dependency and third-party data hosting are trade-offs worth considering. Super Speedy Chat is self-hosted, adds minimal page overhead via its mu-plugin, and keeps your visitor conversations on your own infrastructure. A free trial is available.
