Faster Imports

Published · Last updated

Imports slow down on large sites for reasons that have little to do with the importer itself. Every row triggers a lookup to decide whether the product already exists, a recount of every category it belongs to, a set of resized images, and background jobs that pile up in WooCommerce’s Action Scheduler table. Each step is cheap on a small site and expensive on a large one, and the cost repeats for every row in the file.

Scalability Pro removes or shortens each of those steps. It works alongside your importer, whether that is WP All Import, Super Speedy Imports or another tool.

The per-row lookup: indexes

Before writing anything, an importer looks up each row to see whether it is a new product or an update: by SKU, by title, by a custom field, or through the importer’s own records. Without an index, every lookup scans a table.

The Indexes tab includes indexes for exactly those lookups: the WooCommerce SKU lookup table, post titles, guid, meta keys and values, and WP All Import’s own tables. Create them all from the Indexes tab with Select All. Besides shortening the import, this takes load off the database while the import runs, so the rest of your site stays responsive.

Term recounts: Defer term counting

WordPress recounts the items in every affected category and taxonomy after each insert. Over a large import that recounting dominates. Defer term counting on the Imports tab skips those per-row recounts and recounts in batches of 500 terms on a schedule instead: daily or weekly, at a time you choose. A Recount now button runs it on demand. See Defer Term Counting.

Images: Remove Image Sizes Globally

WordPress generates every registered image size for every image you import. Remove Image Sizes Globally lets you keep only the sizes your theme uses, so each image is resized fewer times. Nothing changes until you choose which sizes to keep. See Remove Image Sizes Globally.

Did you know?

To skip downloading and resizing images during the import altogether, External Images serves images from their original URLs instead.

Background jobs: Optimize Action Scheduler

WooCommerce queues background actions for product updates in the Action Scheduler table, which can grow into millions of rows on a busy store. Optimize Action Scheduler removes completed, failed and cancelled actions daily, and buttons let you clear the table and its logs straight away. See Optimise Action Scheduler.

Also on the Imports tab

  • Optimize Product Attributes Lookup removes a redundant check from WooCommerce’s attribute lookup queries so they can use their index during updates. See Optimise Product Attributes Lookup.
  • Cache Post Counts keeps post counts in Scalability Pro’s own cache instead of recounting each time an item is added or updated. See Cache Post Counts.
