Migrating From Another Chat Plugin
If you are moving to Super Speedy Chat from Tidio, Crisp, Tawk.to, LiveChat, Intercom or any other hosted chat service, this guide walks you through what to expect and gives you a checklist to follow. The short version: switching is quick, but treat it as a fresh start rather than a lift-and-shift of your old data.
There is no automated import of past conversations
Super Speedy Chat does not import conversation history from any third-party chat service. There is no Tidio importer, no Crisp importer, no Tawk.to importer and no Intercom importer, and there is no generic transcript import either. Those services keep your conversation history inside their own systems, and none of them offers a drop-in format that a WordPress plugin could read automatically.
So plan for a clean cut-over. Your new inbox starts empty, and every conversation from your launch day forward is stored in your own WordPress database. Old conversations stay where they are (in the old tool) until you export them, which is covered below.
If you want to move settings across, that is manual too. The two tools store things differently, so you recreate your canned responses, appearance and behaviour rather than importing a settings file. It only takes a few minutes.
What you gain by switching
Before the checklist, it helps to know what actually changes for the better:
- Your data is self-hosted. Conversations and messages live in your own WordPress database, in five
ssc_*tables, not on a third-party server. See Privacy and Data Handling and Backing Up and Migrating Chat Data. - No per-seat or per-conversation fees. Add as many admins as you like and handle as many conversations as you like. You pay for the plugin licence, not for agents or conversation volume.
- Discord and WhatsApp bridges. Answer visitors from where your team already is. Every website conversation can become a Discord thread, and you can bridge chat to WhatsApp too. See Discord Integration: Chat With Visitors From Discord and WhatsApp Integration: Chat With Visitors From WhatsApp.
- LLM auto-reply. When nobody is available, an OpenAI or Anthropic model picks the best-matching canned response and sends it. It is a classifier, not free-form AI, so you stay in control of what visitors see. See LLM Auto-Reply Setup Guide.
- Ultra Ajax speed. Chat polling runs through a lightweight mu-plugin that bypasses the full WordPress stack, so replies feel instant without hammering your host. See the Ultra Ajax Performance Guide.
Export your history before you cancel
Export your old conversation history before you cancel the old subscription. Most hosted services cut off access to your history the moment billing stops, and Super Speedy Chat cannot read those transcripts back in, so once you have cancelled that data is gone for good.
Do this before you cancel the old subscription, because most services cut off access to history once billing stops.
Each tool has its own export, usually under account or data settings:
- Tidio, Crisp, LiveChat and Intercom typically let you export conversations or contacts as CSV or JSON from their dashboards, sometimes on request for older data.
- Tawk.to lets you export chat history and visitor data from its dashboard.
Download whatever they give you and keep it as your own archive. Super Speedy Chat will not read these files back in, but you will want them for reference and for any records you are required to keep. Only cancel the old plan once you have the export safely stored.
Migration checklist
Work through these in order. Each step points to a fuller guide.
- Install and license. Upload the plugin, activate it, and enter your licence key so you get updates. See the Quick Start Guide and Installing Your License, Activation and Updates. On activation the database tables and the Ultra Ajax mu-plugin are created automatically.
- Set up the bubble and appearance. Go to Appearance > Customize > Super Speedy Chat and set your primary colour, header, title, bubble position and trigger icon to match your brand. See Customizing the Chat Widget Appearance. Match your old widget’s look here so returning visitors recognise it.
- Recreate your canned responses. Copy your best saved replies from the old tool into the Canned Responses section of the Automated Responses tab. These are the answers your LLM auto-reply will draw from, so it is worth doing properly. See Canned Responses.
- Configure LLM auto-reply and channels. Add an OpenAI or Anthropic API key and choose a timeout action so visitors get an answer when your team is away (see LLM Auto-Reply Setup Guide). Then connect the channels your team uses, following Discord Integration: Chat With Visitors From Discord and WhatsApp Integration: Chat With Visitors From WhatsApp.
- Set behaviour and login. On the Automated Responses tab, set the admin reply timeout and timeout action. In the Behaviour tab, set poll intervals, sounds and max message length, and decide whether to switch on Require Login. See Behaviour and Session Settings.
- Remove the old plugin’s script. This is the step people forget. Deactivate and remove the old chat plugin or delete its embed snippet from your theme, tag manager or header, otherwise two chat bubbles show at once and visitors get confused. Load your site in a private window and confirm only the Super Speedy Chat bubble appears.
There are no per-seat or per-conversation fees to migrate off. Add as many admins as you like and handle any volume of conversations for the price of the plugin licence alone, so team size is no longer a billing decision.
- Test end to end. Send a test message from a private window, confirm it lands in the wp-admin Chats inbox, reply from admin, and check the reply reaches the visitor within a second or two. If you connected Discord or WhatsApp, confirm the message appears there and that a reply from that channel reaches the visitor. The Quick Start Guide has the full test walkthrough.
Point your team at the new inbox
Finally, redirect the workflows your team already relies on. The primary console is the Chats inbox under Super Speedy Chat in wp-admin (see Managing Conversations). If your team lives in Discord or WhatsApp, wire those up so they can answer without opening wp-admin at all, using the Discord and WhatsApp integration guides above. Tell everyone which channel is now the source of truth, turn on the notifications that matter to them, and retire the old tool’s notifications so nobody keeps watching a dead inbox.
Once the new bubble is live, tested and staffed, and you have your history exported, you can safely cancel the old service.
