Stop full-table scans

WordPress has no full-length index on wp_postmeta.meta_key, so the distinct-key lookup that core’s custom fields box runs on every admin page reads the whole table. Measured on a 2.03 million row postmeta table, that query examined 2,040,368 rows in 950ms. With the index it examines 205 rows in 1.4ms.

Keep wp-admin usable

The author and status counts above the Posts and Products lists are a query each. Scalability Pro caches them, and switches off the months, categories and formats dropdowns that run their own query on every list screen.

Finish imports sooner

WordPress recounts term relationships on every insert, which makes an import an O(n²) problem. Deferring that count and recounting afterwards in 500-term batches is the biggest import speed-up available without changing the importer.

A day on a big store

You open a category page. To print “page 1 of 5,000” WordPress counts every matching row first, which on a large catalogue is usually the most expensive thing the page does. Scalability Pro fetches one extra row instead. That proves a next page exists without counting the other 200,000, and you pick whether visitors see an exact total, an estimate or just Next.

You open Products to fix one price. Before the list even draws, WordPress asks for every distinct custom field name on the site, and the counts above the list are a query each. On the store this was measured against, that one question read 2,040,368 rows and took 950ms. With the index it reads 205 rows in 1.4ms, and you get roughly a second back on every admin page you open for the rest of the day.

You start the Friday import. Before your import tool writes anything, it looks up every single row to decide whether that is a new product or an update to an existing one. Fifty thousand rows is fifty thousand lookups, and unindexed each one is a scan. Scalability Pro indexes the columns those lookups actually use: the WooCommerce SKU table, post titles, guids, custom fields, and seven indexes on WP All Import’s own bookkeeping tables. Then it defers term counting, which WordPress otherwise redoes after every insert, and recounts afterwards in batches of 500.

The indexing is also why your shop stays up. An import that stops scanning tables stops saturating the database, so the front end is no longer queueing behind it. The import finishing sooner is the half you expected. The site staying usable while it runs is the half people write in to tell us about.

A customer places an order. Every note WooCommerce writes to that order, payment complete, stock reduced, each status change, looks like a page edit to a cache-purge plugin, and it purges. On a test store that was 30 outbound HTTP requests inside one checkout. On superspeedyplugins.com they ran to the timeout and added roughly 19 seconds. The shield takes it to none.

And the rest of it

WordPress and WooCommerce list screens. Cached author and status counts, suppressed months and categories dropdowns, and a per-page limit you set yourself.
Options autoload. Measured page scans show which options your site really reads, so the blob loaded on every request stops carrying what nothing uses.
Outbound calls from other plugins. Rules you write can stop a third-party licence, update or telemetry call while an admin page renders. They can never apply to the front end, REST, cron, commerce screens or 22 named payment gateway hosts.
Order admin on a busy store. The user count behind the orders list dropdown is cached instead of recounted, and the object cache stops being flushed on every write while an import runs.
Plugins loading on pages that never use them. Per-page rules stop a plugin loading where a Performance Analysis deep scan proved it does nothing. Anonymous page views only, never a POST, wp-admin, REST or checkout.
One optimisation at a time. Each can be switched on at a named WordPress hook and off again at another, so it applies to a single archive loop rather than the whole request.

Managed database indexes

Adds the indexes your queries need and tracks the ones it owns, so it can validate them later or take them all back out. Building one does not lock the table for writes on any database that supports it.

Three pagination models

An estimated total, a configured maximum number of pages, or progressive previous and next links. All three fetch one extra row and discard it, which proves a next page exists without running the full count.

Lean wp-admin screens

Cached counts, replaced list tables, dropdown suppression and per-page control. The list-table copies are loaded only where they are used.

Bulk-operation controls

Defer term counting, schedule batched recounts daily or weekly at a time you pick, and cut the intermediate image sizes WordPress generates during an import.

Per-page plugin unloading

Evidence-led rather than a hand-written list. Four confidence tiers, and only the certain tier is applied for you. Decisions come from the parsed request path, a POST is never filtered, and payment, security, membership, consent, caching and multilingual plugins are on a protected list it refuses to touch. For the engineer evaluating this

Skip this if you just want the store to be quick. It is here because the person signing this off usually wants to know exactly what lands on the server.

Index builds. Every build asks for ALGORITHM=INPLACE, LOCK=NONE and falls back where a given index shape cannot be built in place. Verified against MariaDB 11.8.8, Percona Server 8.0.46-37 and MySQL 8.0.46, across every index shape the plugin creates, including prefixed columns, DESC and UNIQUE. A build that outlives the web request reports still applying and waits for the database rather than erroring.
Ownership. It only ever touches indexes it created, matched on its own prefix plus an ownership check. Deactivating the plugin leaves them in place; deleting it takes them out.
Front-end weight. The bundled list-table copies, 118KB and 2,151 lines of PHP, are parsed only on wp-admin requests and under WP-CLI. Select2 is vendored rather than fetched from a CDN, and the settings screen loads no third-party fonts.
Scope control. Any optimisation can be switched on at a named WordPress hook and off again at another, so it applies to one archive loop rather than the whole request. Registered as filters only.
Headless. wp spro recommended and wp spro status drive the preset and report every managed index and outstanding setting, with dry-run, indexes-only and settings-only modes. The same operations are exposed to AI agents over MCP.

Frequently asked questions

Will it speed up a small site?

Probably not much. Scalability Pro earns its money once the tables are big enough that WordPress’s counts, scans and recounts start hurting. On a small site the value is that those bottlenecks never arrive.

Does it conflict with Query Monitor or other database plugins?

No. Everything Scalability Pro does runs through ordinary WordPress filters, so you can keep Query Monitor, HyperDB, LudicrousDB or a database cache installed alongside it.

Will it fix slow filters or search?

Not by itself. Scalability Pro works on the queries WordPress runs everywhere. Super Speedy Filters and Super Speedy Search are built for those two specialist jobs.

Can I control individual optimisations?

Yes. The plugin is a set of separately configurable optimisations, with settings import and export. If you would rather not work through them one by one, the Main tab applies the recommended set in one click and previews everything it will change first.

Does it work with WooCommerce HPOS?

Yes. Scalability Pro declares compatibility with High-Performance Order Storage, the Cart and Checkout blocks and the product block editor, so WooCommerce raises no warning about it, and the checkout purge shield was measured against a store running HPOS. What Scalability Pro does not do is rewrite order queries themselves: it speeds up the work around them, such as the cached user count behind the orders list and the purge cascade during checkout. If your bottleneck is the orders table itself, say so before you buy and we will tell you straight whether this is the right plugin.

What should I do before enabling it on a live site?

Use staging first and take a current database backup. Scalability Pro can add database indexes and alter how expensive WordPress queries run. Index builds request ALGORITHM=INPLACE, LOCK=NONE where the database supports it and report real database errors; an index shape the server cannot build in place falls back to its normal build. Each optimisation can be controlled separately.

Do I have to understand every setting?

No. The Main tab has a single Enable good settings button that creates every applicable index and turns on every optimisation a visitor cannot see. It shows you the full plan before applying anything and lists what it deliberately leaves alone, with the reason. The individual settings are all still there when you want them.

How do I know it actually worked?

Install our free Super Speedy Performance Analysis plugin first, which the Main tab can do for you in one click. A good-settings run then measures your key pages before the changes and again afterwards, and reports the generation time and SQL time for each page alongside the URL that was measured.

Does it work alongside Nginx Helper?

Yes, and it fixes a problem there. Nginx Helper hooks comment creation without checking the comment type, so every WooCommerce order note runs a full purge cascade for the order. On a test store that was 30 outbound HTTP requests inside a single checkout. The checkout purge shield is on by default and is implemented as filters only, so deactivating Scalability Pro restores the original behaviour exactly and Nginx Helper’s own settings are never written to. Verified against Nginx Helper 2.3.5 with WooCommerce 11.0.0 and HPOS.

How safe is unloading plugins per page?

The tab only offers a rule when there is measured evidence for it, and it sorts every plugin into four tiers. Only the certain tier, where a deep scan proved byte-identical output with no queries, no outbound HTTP, no mail and no enqueued assets, is applied automatically. The rest wait for you. The mu-plugin that does the work decides from the parsed request path rather than a substring match, filters anonymous page views only, and never touches a POST, wp-admin, REST, a system entry point or a logged-in visitor. Payment, security, membership, consent, caching and multilingual plugins are on a protected list it refuses to unload even if asked. Every uncertain case falls through to loading everything, and there is an emergency switch in wp-config.php. It needs our free Super Speedy Performance Analysis plugin, version 0.24.0 or later, and it installs an mu-plugin which is removed when you deactivate Scalability Pro. It is not offered on multisite.

Can it block another plugin’s outbound requests?

Only under rules you write, and only while a wp-admin page renders. Outbound requests are allowed by default. A rule can never apply to the front end, REST, cron, AJAX, any form submission, the plugin, theme and update screens, WooCommerce and checkout screens, your own site’s URLs, or 22 named payment gateway hosts. A blocked call returns an ordinary transport error, so the calling plugin fails the way it already handles rather than hanging.

Can I run it from the command line?

wp spro recommended applies the same preset, with dry-run, indexes-only and settings-only options. wp spro status lists every managed index and every recommended setting still outstanding, and wp spro options-scan, options-plan, options-apply and options-revert drive the autoload optimiser. The same operations are available to AI agents over MCP.

This plugin made the websites for my clients quite faster, something other “speed” plugins couldn’t do. If you need one “speed” plugin, it’s this one! You only need to keep in mind that to achieve this, you switch off some calculations and some options you might need. So you have to read carefully the description of what the option does.

Let’s be honest, a magic wand, set and forget?? I’ve seen so many plugins that promise the earth and then become one big mess of conflicting options that you need a physic degree to understand.
So how does Scalability Pro differ…
Install, index tables, select which options you want to be fast and those your happy with your current performance…
Wait five minutes and test…
On advice I installed the query monitor plug and didn’t just rely on GT Metric, however the results were plain to see, 11-12 seconds down to 2 seconds!!
And not only that, when I got involved in the Discord chat I was able to glean even more pearls of wisdom which has halved my autoload options and further streamlined my database, 10 years overdue…
Oh and conflicts with Caching….. None, I’ve got a pretty fierce set of Litespeed cache settings and the store doesn’t miss a heartbeat now!

Recommend Scalability Pro if you have a lot of products and use wpallimport or wpallexport, improve import and export and also speed up your website.

Well. Very long story in short format.
I set up site for my client. All products are imported via XML / JSON from different wholesale warehouses. At the moment 26k total products / 18k in stock. With over 10k products and with Divi theme site started to slow down. Divi itself is quite heavy at these level because of per post / taxonomy templates and generating static assets per post / tax. Even if these Divi side optimizations are turned off, site is quite slow. So we started testing. Keep in mind – we had frontend assets optimized so LCP / FCP etc metrics were on par with that kind of structure. Biggest problem was on backend. For Google / GTMetrix it meant TBT (total blocking time) or as I understand – time for server to return data – that was around 12 seconds. Turned off Divi “performance” we got it 3 seconds down but still over 8 seconds.

So, here comes Scalabilty Pro. At first it was like – meh, i get it down to 3 seconds. Store became usable. More or less. But after wee bit tweaking and testing, combining with Perfmatters and WP Rocket – at the moment we sit TBT 10ms dektop / 10-700ms mobile. And we can use page preloading again which previously clogged down DB.

So, SSP only with indexes did a miracle on a site. With other tweaks admin pages are usable and site mostly works faster than small static pages.

And this all runs on shared web hosting at zone.ee server.

In another hand – Dave is awesome. Very fast support on Discord – explain problem and soon you have a solution.

I’m super happy with this plugin!
We went from 30s product page load to 1s, which is marvelous for a product with 800+ variations.

One big reminder for myself and tip for others : LOG OUT OF WP-ADMIN!!! Being logged in also show the private and unpublished posts, which doesn’t give the plugin the chance to show its use!

I have been using Scalability Pro for a good few years now with no complaints. It’s a great plugin and has lots of great little optimisation settings that can really boost your speed on both the front and backend of your site. Our backend was getting really slow and would even crash sometimes when using it. Scalability Pro has helped with this tremendously.

The Discord server is very active and provides helpful and fast support too.

Our current WP websites have been really laggy and despite switching to more powerful servers, we kept encountering bottlenecks until we found WPI.

Today put this tool on my website with 50,000+ products. The page loading times were really 10 to 20 seconds during imports via wpallimport. Set all steps and go through and now around 1 to 2.

  I just looked through my emails and I see that your site crashed when you were creating the indexes – this is almost certainly due to your server running out of disk space. The indexes don’t take up too much extra space on your disks, but they do need some free space in order to be created.

I can’t praise enough this plugin. It helped me scale my woocommerce site. Importing products now it’s a breeze! Scalability pro cut the importing time to half (i am also using external images). Also my site loads much much faster than previously! Next stop: super speedy search and faster woo widgets.

It took me almost a year to find this plugin. I can truthfully say it is without question a must have if you have any intensions of scaling woocommerce. Not to mention awesome support the few issues I had because of my theme were taken care of by Dave himself. My client site has about 10k products variations. Page loading time was around 10s, and by adding this plugin and doing a quick setup by following the guide, the WooCommerce pages now load in 2s. Still a bit more tweaking to do on my side with a few different options, but this plugin took my client site from being useless (yes a 10s load time for product pages renders your site useless!) to very useful 😉

I bought the plugin a month back and I was impressed by Dave’s support, he is really knowledgeable. I had a product database of around 300k products which is also using wp-allimports custom fields functionality which made my postmeta database comprising of about 50 million rows.

Pros:
– This plugin creates indexes and has options to fix edit page issue in admin panel – I received when before, but when I started using scalability pro, it fixed it.
– My page load time for different categories decreased from 30 seconds to around 20 seconds with products around 100k which is great- all thanks to indexes created by the plugin
– Good support from Dave(the plugin was not working on my website, but Dave did do all the work manually on my website and recommended me a lot of stuff)

Cons:

– Scalability Pro is I think at its initial stages and it will improve gradually. Different theme support and good service in future can sustain. The reason I’m listing this is because when I started using this plugin, my product database tripled, but it was fixed with in 2 days by Dave when I told him, so if you’re having high traffic I would recommend to test it on your test site before making it live.

– It won’t necessarily solve all the problems, I still can’t use filters on Products section(where I can see all the products) in wp-admin section, so you will be using it like a usual customer only or if you’re technical you can go to MySQL database, see your products. It should have solved this problem

– Filters provided by scalability pro don’t work, I have raised issue with Dave but not fixed yet. Filters also don’t support wp_postmeta fields or custom fields. I really don’t like to message him for everything, it should have been solved.

– I think search still doesn’t use Match .. Against(default wordpress search) or as a matter of fact on any pages.. I analysed it using query monitor but it still seems to use Like only. No support for custom fields. Other problem is created by wp_postmeta table(as all the extra fields related to product are in wp_postmeta) Wp_posts table is not that big a deal, as only 1 row is created per product while in wp_postmeta around 16-20 rows are created per product, so either you’ll have to write custom search. If custom search was there with this plugin, you could really see performance improvements in your site(I’m not ignoring the performance improvements but they are not noticeable for me as my search dependence is on wp_postmeta table and category page loads under 20 seconds, which should have been under 2 seconds). Dave talked about releasing beta version for custom search but still isn’t released yet.

I am waiting for updates on this plugin and hopefully errors I listed will be solved in future. All in all I would recommend to go with this plugin, it will offer you useful insights about your website and hopefully if you’re a wordress programmer, you can solve those or if you aren’t, you can always hire Dave or other programmer.

This plugin offered me a ray of hope that I don’t have to discard my wordpress website and go with Magento(if you read it on stackoverflow, everyone would recommend agianst wordpress for products with large database). If you’re programmer or your programmer can understand the way plugin works and take it from there instead of relying on Dave, this is great product.

  Regarding missing filters – there was a bug introduced in the last version which caused this error on some setups, to do with adding the manual sorting functionality.
  
  A fix has been coded up and is ready to be deployed, I’m just adding compatibility with the WooBrands plugin before I deploy.
  
  re: Match against search (instead of like) this functionality was removed from Scalability Pro and has been added to a separate plugin called Super Speed Search which everyone who has purchased Scalability Pro to date will get for free. This new plugin is almost ready and is so fast that the search results update using ajax as you type (tested on 800,000+ product reference site).
  
  Sorry about the delay with these releases – I’ve been working on making super speedy search as compatible as possible with as many themes as possible.
